The Santa Rosa Junior College Students For Recovery club will host a social advocacy project that showcases the film “The Wisdom of Trauma” April 9 at Newman Auditorium in SRJC’s Emeritus Hall.
The film features Dr. Gabor Maté diving into the concept of trauma and its effects on people’s lives and societal issues. According to his website, Maté, bestselling author and renowned addiction expert, calls for a compassionate approach toward addiction, whether in ourselves or in others.
A Q&A will follow the screening from 6:50 to 7:50 p.m. with filmmakers Zaya and Mauricio Benazzo, and rehabilitation counselor Tessa Reynolds.
According to the psychiatry institute, Zaya Benazzo is a filmmaker from Bulgaria who has produced and directed several award-winning documentaries in Europe and the United States. Mauricio Benazzo, an Italian filmmaker, started his career as an actor and model before transitioning to filmmaking. This led him to travel to India to shoot the award-winning documentary “Short Cut to Nirvana.”
“The Wisdom of Trauma” will be shown at Newman Auditorium, with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the film starting at 5:15 p.m. The film is 1 hour and 27 minutes.
The event is free and open to the public. Snacks and refreshments will be available, with free parking available in the Emeritus parking lot.
