Update: The Santa Rosa Junior College announced at 4 p.m. the Santa Rosa Campus will be open and classes will continue as scheduled on Oct. 15, following a power outage that shut down the campus Oct. 14.
SRJC canceled classes and ended an event celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day early Oct. 14 at the Santa Rosa Campus after a large-scale power outage.
The outage on the Santa Rosa Campus started at 11:59 a.m. All buildings expect Pedroncelli,
Burdo, Call, Kunde and the SRJC Foundation lost power during the outage. The Polly O’Meara Doyle Hall dorms initially lost power but were able to regain it due to backup generators, authorities said.
“What’s really important is that, regardless of what buildings have power, the entire campus is closed for today,” said Sarah Pew, SRJC senior director of Marketing, Communications & Public Affairs.
The power outage is currently exclusively affecting the Santa Rosa Campus resulting in all classes at this location being canceled on Oct. 14.
Classes on the remaining SRJC campuses are planned to continue as normal.
Oct. 14 was also the SRJC’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day event, which had to be cut an hour short due to many of the school’s facilities, specifically restrooms, being unavailable.
“It’s unfortunate that we had to shorten the event [Indigenous Peoples’ Day] but it’s for the safety of our students, the public and our faculty at the event,” Pew said.
SRJC is currently still investigating leads as to the cause of the power outage.
An email update covering information on the outage and the state of classes for the following day was sent out just after 4 p.m. on Oct. 14, which stated classes would resume Oct. 15.
