The Santa Rosa Junior College volleyball team continued their winning ways by starting their conference schedule with a hard fought, 3-1 win over Cosumnes River, at home on Wednesday night.
The game was highly contested, starting with a very tight first set. The Hawks scored first on the night, but soon after, Kiana Walker got the Bear Cubs on the scoresheet. The set went back and forth, but SRJC went on to take the first set, 28-26.
The Bear Cubs dominated the Hawks in the early stages of the following set, consistently scoring and keeping the Hawks at bay. The intense set went down to the wire, but through the latter stages Cosumnes River scored multiple consecutive points, and the momentum shifted. The Bear Cubs saw their three point lead slip following a timeout, and an emphatic spike from the Hawks saw them take the set, 25-23.
Despite the disappointing end to the second set, the Bear Cubs showed real determination and fought back to take a 25-22 win in the third set. The team carried that momentum with a dominant fourth that saw them score five early points without reply. The set ended in a 25-21 win, giving SRJC the 3-1 match win.
Bear Cubs head coach Ally Sather was pleased with her team on the night.
“We showed a really gritty performance,” Sather said. “Earning a lot of points, showing a lot of resilience late in rallies. Overall, I’m really proud of how we were able to finish that match.”
SRJC setter/opposite Lily Comma was happy with her individual performance, as well as the teams.
“I feel like my performance tonight was good because I feel like we all supported each other tonight and we all brought the energy that made it possible to push ourselves to win,” Comma said.
Sather looked forward to the next match against Sierra College.
“It’s going to be another super competitive match, we’re hoping to build off of tonight’s performance, clean up a couple of things here and there, and get ready for that scouting report, and then come out ready to play,” Sather said.
The SRJC volleyball team will be back in action against Sierra College at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Haehl Pavilion Gym.
