The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s soccer team drew 0-0 against Cosumnes River College for their second straight 0-0 tie on Nov. 12 at home. After a loss to Folsom Lake on Nov.15, the Bear Cubs finished the regular season at 10-5-4.
The Bear Cubs entered the match with a six-match unbeaten streak while the Hawks entered having lost or tied their last four..
“We played hard, but we didn’t finish,” Kinahan said. “It’s a good team though. I think it’s the best team we’ve played all year. Last time we got an early goal, kinda sat on it. The guys were playing hard. Execution wasn’t there, but not by lack of effort, I was really happy with the effort. Guys played really hard, it meant something to them, we kept a clean sheet like we haven’t lost at home so I’m happy about that but we had two ties at home.”
Both teams were coming into the first half with very little action. Five minutes into the second half, Cosumnes River forward Miguel Garcia shot from inside the box but missed wide.
A few minutes later Garcia got a yellow card for a slide tackle on SRJC midfielder Kleber Maldonado.
In the 56th minute the Bear Cubs nearly took the first lead of the match but Cosumnes River goalkeeper Nicholas Molinari made a double save on shots by midfielder Anton Berlung as he ran inside the box on a one on one situation with the keeper as he shot the ball but Molinari saved the shot and Berlung got the ball again from the rebound from the Molinari’s save, as he shot it again and saved it ounce again.
As the game kept going on the Bear Cubs were doing their best to put the ball in the back of the net.
In the 72th minute, Cosumnes River forward Diego Angelina received a yellow card for a foul on Bear Cubs goalkeeper Abel Calvillo. Calvillo kicked the ball high but Angelina fouled the keeper after the shot attempt.
Hawks forward Nathan Beltran nearly scored the first goal of the game but Calvillo saved the shot attempt.
Both goalkeepers contributed heavily to the scoreless match with Calvillo saving 5 and Molinari scoring 3.
Following the tie on Nov. 12, the Bear Cubs lost 2-1 in their final regular season match of the season on Nov. 15 and will begin the first round of playoffs on Nov. 23.
