The Santa Rosa Junior College women’s soccer team beat American River College 4-0 at home on Oct. 15 in their second conference match after a tough loss at San Joaquin Delta College Oct. 11.
Following the match, the Bear Cubs moved up to 9-2-1 on the season, with a 1-1 conference record. As a team, they’ve scored 53 times this season in 12 games with 4.42 goals per game.
“This is a huge stat we’ve been super proud of since we started this season,” said SRJC head coach Crystal Chaidez. “Goals are not easy to score in any sport let alone soccer, so to have that stat is a big testament to our offensive players but also our team to have a more attacking minded mentality but also our formation since we started the season has been a 1-3-5-2 [formation] and i think that’s a really good positive effect on our goal scoring ability.”
SRJC Forward Shae Dougherty got the Bear Cubs off to a strong start, scoring in the eighth minute and capitalizing after the Beavers goalkeeper kicked the ball right to her.
“She passed it right to me and I was like ‘I need to keep my composure, just put it in the back of the net,’ so that’s what I did, I’m just glad I didn’t hit it over,” Dougherty said.
The Beavers nearly responded a minute later but SRJC goalkeeper Brooklyn Martins made an amazing save on an attempted header to maintain the Bear Cubs lead.
SRJC doubled their lead when midfielder Mia Cara shot a deflection from the keeper into the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 16th minute.
After a near-goal by midfielder Sulema Para Solorio, midfielder Olivia Hohnstein scored a screamer in the 69th minute dribbling towards the defender and kicking the ball to the left hand side of the net from outside the box.
The Beavers were denied a goal again when Martins made a fantastic save on a shot from Beavers forward Emily Hansen.
In the 79th minute, after a pass from Genevieve Stewart, Dougherty dribbled past three defenders and shot the ball from a low shot from outside of the box for her second goal of the game to make it 4-0.
“Second goal came off of our pressure up top which Genevieve [Stewart], she tipped the ball out to me, I got the ball and I was looking to pass it, and then I saw a lane right between the three defenders,” Dougherty said. “I took [the goalie] on and slotted it in the bottom corner and the net.”
After a 2-1 conference win at Folsom Lake on Oct. 18, the Bear Cubs will be back at home Tuesday Oct. 22.
