The Bear Cubs men’s and women’s tennis teams outmatched Folsom Lake College last Friday, bringing both team’s records to an even 1-1 in the Big 8 Conference.
The men’s team won 8-1 and the women’s won 5-4.
The teams played three doubles matches and six singles matches, each worth one point towards the team score, with five points rendering a victory. Caleb Murray and Moses Kuzu won their match in the second doubles spot 8-1 with strong net-play and superior serving.
“We gel well together,” Murray said. “We are aggressive at net, we try to attack a lot.”
The men’s only loss was at the no. 1 singles spot.
SRJC’s Kevin To, who is battling a hamstring and quad injury, won the first set but lost the second set 1-6. An 11-9 tiebreaker decided the match. “I felt like I could have played a whole lot better but my head was just not in the game,” To said.
At the number one women’s singles, Angel Tran won her match 6-4, 6-2.
“The first set I felt like I played really bad,” Tran said. “I pulled it together the second set.”
The women’s team won two out of the three doubles matches, including an 8-5 victory in the second doubles position, which was an even match until the end when SRJC’s Laura Essayah and Erin Leveroni stopped playing safe and were more aggressive.
“We’ve been working on doubles strategy every practice so their positioning and their shot selection is pretty darn good,” said head coach Jay Samonte about the women’s doubles.
