The SRJC baseball team’s formula of good pitching and situational hitting has the Bear Cubs off to great start in the 2013 campaign.
Brain Webster got the start against Solano College on Feb. 21 at Sypher field and hurled a complete game, yielding only one run. Webster threw 89 pitches while scattering five hits over nine innings.
“Felt good,” Webster said. “I didn’t get a complete game last year but worked hard and got it today”.
Offensive production is the Bear Cubs’ strong suit this season, but hitters had to make adjustments after being shutout through four innings. In the fifth inning, outfielder Steve McElroy drew a walk and infielder Brandon Baranzini doubled. With runners at second and third, infielder Nico Filice hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing McElroy to score, tying the game at 1-1. “[There was] a lot of confidence in their swings,” said bench coach Tom Francois.
In the sixth inning, the Bear Cubs loaded the bases after three singles in a row. Baranzini came to the plate with one out and cashed in an RBI opportunity with another sacrifice fly, scoring infielder Brent Gillespie giving SRJC its first lead of the game. Gillespie later delivered a third sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, giving the Bear Cubs a 3-1 lead, which remained the final score.
The Bear Cubs’ pitching staff currently ranks fourth in the Big 8 Conference with a gaudy 2.48 ERA. On the offensive side, SRJC ranks first in several key categories including stolen bases (21), on-base percentage (.389) and slugging percentage (.370).
The SRJC baseball team looks to continue their winning ways, as they head to San Pablo to take on Contra Costa College at 2 p.m. Feb. 26.
