Even though SRJC’s softball team ended the season 6-14, the team produced some of the top hitters in the Big 8 Conference.
Keeley Ray, Kayla Lowe and Samantha Bartee had the second, fourth and fifth top batting averages in the Big 8. Ray ended the season with a .469 average, just under the top hitter from Sierra. Lowe and Bartee also hit over .400 this season with a .444 for Lowe and .436 for Bartee.
Ray had 13 stolen bases with 61 hits in 39 games. Bartee drove in RBIs all season long, leading the team with 39 while also hitting 5 home runs. Lowe had 12 doubles, 4 HR’s and 33 RBI’s.
Sierra College had the highest overall batting average with .387 and American River had the second highest batting .344. SRJC came in third in batting average, hitting an overall .322. The softball team had 53 stolen bases where Sierra only had 19 and American River had 23. Even though SRJC produced some top batters, they only had 14 home runs compared to Sierra’s 72 HR’s and American River’s 41 HR’s.
Pitching was not SRJC’s strong point this year. Pitcher, Haylie Chase ended with a 5.68 ERA with 6-8 record but contributed to the hitting with 3 home runs and 16 RBIs. Cheyenne Bricker was 9-13 with a 6.50 ERA in the 30 games she played this season and had one save.
Overall, SRJC ended the Big 8 Conference 18-21 with a 5.85 ERA. Despite many losses, they put double digits on the score board in nine games against: Gavilan (10-5), City College San Francisco (17-0), Chabot (14-6), Marin (14-2), Napa (22-13), Diablo Valley (20-4), Cosumnes River (11-3) and Diablo Valley (12-9 & 23-8 in a double header). With hard work, new talent and revised techniques, the Bear Cubs can redeem themselves in the 2013 season.
