The SRJC womens soccer team played its last regular season home game, easily routing the Cosumnes River College Hawks 5-1 on Tuesday Nov.8. The first half was dominated by the Lady Bear Cubs with Cara Curtin scoring three goals.
“Cara got a hat trick, She’s something else,She’s fast approaching 30[goals]:she’s just hard to stop,” head coach Luke Oberkirch said.
Ten minutes into the second half, down 3-nil, the Hawks scored from 25 yards out to finally get on the scoreboard. Then Lady Bear Cub freshmen forward Christina Rebata dazzled the crowd, scoring four minutes later when she got wide open and broke away to the goal. She scored with a stunning, surgically placed kick past the Hawks goalie.
Rebata followed that goal with a second at the 27 – minute mark with another impressive shot making the score 5-1,crushing any hopes of a Hawks comeback. “She’s doing well [Rebata] when she’s focused, she can really help us, she’s good now but she’s definitely going to be good in the future,” Oberkirch said.
SRJC now has a overall record of 14-1-3 and a conference record of 9-1-3, and with a win on thursday Nov. 10 in Sacramento against Sacramento City College the team can win their conference.
Currently SRJC has scored 55 goals and allowed only 11 this season while ranking first in the state according to California Community College Soccer News with a power ranking of 2.64.
According to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, SRJC is ranked seventh in the country. On Saturday Nov. 19th the Lady Bear Cubs are likely to host a playoff game. “The number one seed always plays at home, This game today pretty much locked up the number one seed,” Oberkirch said. “ I think the teams really playing well right now, I think with tonight we could be peaking for the playoffs which is nice.”
