The SRJC baseball team competed in a doubleheader against the Monterey Lobos, and won both games after a tough loss to Monterey last Thursday. The Bear Cubs won the first game 10-0 behind an overpowering complete game shutout by Jon Finn and won the second game 5-3. The team’s season record improves to 8-2.
In the first game, Finn and the team wasted no time taking control. The offense loaded the bases with three straight hits in the bottom of the first, and shortstop Nick Rodda scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Daniel Binz.
Through five innings Finn was looking dominant, he allowed only two hits, gave up no walks and earned four strikeouts. In the fifth inning, the Bear Cub’s bats busted the game open after the Lobos’ starting pitcher Michael Romiza fell apart. Romiza hit three straight batters with wild pitches. Then Rodda earned a walk, scoring right fielder Dalton Johnson.
Left fielder Marcus Kimura stepped-up with two outs and hit a two-run double scoring second baseman Ryan Strouse and centerfielder Jayce Ray. After Kimura’s at-bat, Clark Eckert entered the game to pitch for the Lobos.
On Eckert’s first pitch, Bear Cub’s first baseman Donald Walter hit another two-run double scoring Rodda and Kimura.
In the sixth inning, Ray hit a single down the right-field foul line, which scored Johnson and third baseman, Chris Bradshaw. Then, Ray and Rodda scored when Walter earned a single. After six innings, the Bear Cubs commanded the game, leading 10-0.
Finn finished the last three innings in impressive fashion earning three more strikeouts and allowing only one hit.
In the second game, Bradshaw and catcher Peter Creamer performed some late inning heroics and Wesley Deal pitched six innings to earn the win 5-3.
The Bear Cubs next home game is against Delta on March 5.
