The SRJC volleyball team wasted no time beating Diablo Valley College in straight sets to make it 11 straight wins, all in the Big 8 Conference. The Lady Bear Cubs dominated the Vikings 25-5, 25-16, 25-15 in a match lasting little more than an hour.
The Lady Bear Cubs are now in sole possession of first place with one game remaining against Sierra College before the NorCal playoffs. The Lady Bear Cubs improved their record to 22-3 overall, and the Vikings fell to 9-16.
During the first set, the Lady Bear Cubs overpowered the Lady Vikings from the first serve. Sam Siebert served the Lady Bear Cubs to a 6-0 lead. Taylor Nelson picked up where Siebert left off with six points of her own, including three aces. The Lady Vikings appeared shell-shocked and could not recover, losing the set 25-5.
The second set was much of the same. The Lady Bear Cubs did not miss a beat. The Lady Vikings kept it close for a while, tying it at 10 before the Lady Bear Cubs pulled out a string of 20 points, winning the set 25-16.
During the third set, the Bear Cubs unloaded their bench and still maintained the same high level of play. Mid-way into the third set a forceful Lady Bear Cub kill went awry. A Lady Viking made a diving dig to continue play. The ball found its way on top of the net and rolled towards the scores table before falling out of bounds on the Lady Vikings’ side of the court. This play summed up the entire night for the Lady Bear Cubs. Everything was going their way. The Lady Bear Cubs won the set 23-15.
The Bear Cubs are currently ranked 10th in the state according to the latest poll by California Community College Women’s Volleyball Coaches Association. They are number four in the north behind Cabrillo College, Fresno College and Sac City College.
The California Community College Of Athletic Association changed their playoff format this year. There will no longer be eight teams and double elimination. It will be the top two teams from the north and the top two teams from the south. The NorCal playoffs start Nov. 23rd. The Lady Bear Cubs end their regular season against Sierra College on Nov. 17.
