Every Tuesday night I snuggle up with a blanket and watch the popular TV show Glee. After a month long break they came back strong with the Super Bowl episode featuring Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” and it was great.
However, there is one thing about Glee that recently I cannot stand. The show has conformed to pop culture. I was very excited for the new season, but the cast sang pop song after pop song. Where did the show tunes go? A recent episode was dedicated entirely to songs from the disgraceful artist, Justin Bieber.
It is trying to keep its fans entertained by focusing on popular songs, or even worse by dedicating an episode to Justin Bieber. The whole episode was about the Glee Club guys dressing like Bieber, acting like Bieber, and singing Bieber’s songs. The worst part was that girls fell for it, including Rachel Berry.
What happened to the good taste of Glee? What happened to Rachel singing Broadway tunes, like when she and Kurt dueled to the song “Defying Gravity,” from “Wicked”?
One word: money.
Glee has become the next “Now That’s What I Call Music, Vol. 63,” hocking compilation albums and repackaging products that a lot of us already have and liked well enough the first time.
Not only that, but artists that get the “Glee” treatment laugh all the way to the bank with their fat royalty checks.
My favorite episode of Glee was when Lea Michelle (Rachel), and Idina Menzel (Shelby Rachel Berry’s biological mother) sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables.” Rachel found a tape of her mother singing it to her and she began to sing along. I think of that song when I think of Glee. Its the reason why I began watching Glee on a regular basis, not to hear Justin Bieber. The show was different, not afraid of doing old-school music and Broadway tunes.
Glee needs to bring back the show tunes after it gets all the pop music out of its system. If the show sticks to only pop it will lose me and fans like me. They may gain some new fans, but the real fans want to hear a diverse mix of genres. Sure some pop is nice, but forget about Bieber.
