Santa Rosa Junior College’s Student Government Assembly members heard comments from Jeane Erlenbon, coordinator of Student Health Promotion in Student Health Services, who shared a suicide awareness presentation named QPR, and Candy Owens, coordinator of Student Engagement Programs in Petaluma announced her resignation from SRJC at their Sept. 30 meeting.
Homecoming Football Game
SGA members and the Student Life committee are working together on a homecoming football game at 5 p.m. on Oct. 18.
SGA approved $700 for a balloon arch, streamers and other decorations for the SRJC Football Homecoming Game.
“The way an event looks brings the immediate success to an event, if we amp up the ambiance on the field it will make students feel more excited,” said B Islas, Vice President of Clubs in Petaluma.
“Inter-Club Council members have shown interest in creating a homecoming spirit week, specifically Black Student Union mentioned interest,” said Andrew Simmalaychanh, Vice President of Clubs in Santa Rosa.
SGA members appointed to an urgent committee
Hilleary Zarate, manager of Student Support Services, expressed the urgent need for two SGA members to be appointed to the Board of Review Committee to help review a formal student grievance between a student and faculty that has not been resolved through the established student complaint and grievance policy.
Vice President of Legislation Anne Donnelly, and Vice President of Marketing in Petaluma, Emily Marian were appointed by SGA members to the Board of Review Committee.
“I think I could be a good person to help share a student perspective and also see how things are done, and it’s very interesting to see how this process happens,” said Emily Marian, Vice President of Marketing in Petaluma.
Zarate emphasized resolution through conflict.
“I need two students to be appointed because it’s basically a hearing,” Zarate said. “There will be two faculty, two students, the student who had the complaint with the instructor who was involved in the complaint, and the manager will be the chair of the committee.”
QPR presentation
Jeane Erlenborn, Coordinator of Student Health Promotion in Student Health Services, gave a 30-minute presentation during the meeting called QPR, which stands for “Question. Persuade. Refer.” The presentation covered suicide statistics, information and campus resources available to support students battling depression.
“It’s about 1100 college students dying by suicide each year, and about 10% saying they’ve seriously considered suicide,” Erlenborn said. “We feel like we have to say the right thing. We’re gonna save this person. You might not, but it’s connection and listening. It’s not always having the perfect reply.”
Candy Owens resigns
Candy Owens, coordinator of Student Engagement Programs of Petaluma, announced she resigned from the SRJC. Bree Clark will be filling in as an advisor for her position while the school searches for someone to fill this position.
“This is my last week,” Owens said. “I wish you the best going forward. This was a really exciting group this year, and I’m sad for all the things I won’t see you doing.”
