Santa Rosa Junior College Student Government members approved funding for a campus-wide healthy snack initiative, and a basketball hoop. They also heard comments from SRJC President Dr. Angélica Garcia and the Sonoma County Chapter of the League of Women Voters at their meeting on Sept. 9.
Funding for Healthy Snack Initiative and Basketball Hoop
SGA adopted a healthy snack initiative and approved $200 from the marketing budget for promotional material. The initiative is in response to student feedback looking for healthier snack options on campus.
“[The marketing materials] encourage students to make healthier, mindful decisions on what they eat,” Vice President of Student Health Kathryn Leigh Viduya said.
SGA approved $600 from the discretionary budget to purchase a basketball hoop for club events and activities on the Santa Rosa campus.
Upcoming Events
SGA members emphasized upcoming events on all three SRJC campuses, including Club Day on Sept. 17 at the Petaluma campus and Sept. 18 at the Santa Rosa campus, Roseland campus Welcome Day on Sept. 28, and the Agriculture Ambassadors’ Fall Festival on Oct. 12.
Vice President of Clubs for the Santa Rosa Campus Andrew Simmalaychanh announced a newly revamped district-wide event calendar. Students can submit events to be approved, and then submit them to be added to the calendar with the assistance of a staff member, faculty advisor, or SGA member.
SRJC President Public Comment
President Garcia highlighted the district’s arrangement of “facilitated discussions,” during the meeting. The district is working with the external organization Rooted in Love to organize these discussions.
“We really want students’ voices to be heard,” Garcia said. “This is part of our district-wide initiative to create a culture that reflects our mission, our vision, our values. Where our institutional and workplace culture is one of creating a sense of belonging.”
Students can join the discussions on the following dates: Sept. 17 at the Santa Rosa campus, Sept. 18 at the Petaluma campus, Oct. 11 via Zoom, and Oct. 14-15 in the Public Safety Training Center at the Roseland campus. Additionally, students will also be able to participate online through a confidential but non-anonymous form.
League of Women Voters
SGA members heard a special report from Robyn Bramhall and Chris Reizenman directors at large for the Sonoma County League of Women Voters. They stressed the importance of getting out to vote this year and introduced the organization’s Elections Ambassadors Program.
“The League of Women Voters’ Elections Ambassadors Program aims to raise student voices through peer-to-peer registration and voter education,” Bramhall said.
