Honesty and clarity were apparent in the presentation on Latino mental health awareness and opportunities in the field April 3, in the Bertolini student center at Santa Rosa Junior College.
The presentation featured a panel of professionals in the fields of mental and behavioral health and social work. Each shared their personal history and struggles within their careers and offered answers and advice for students who are working towards a career in mental health.
“It is hard to keep your eye on the prize and to miss life to continue to seek your goal,” one of the panelist said.
“It reminded me of the power of discussion,” said SRJC student Mary Buckley.
Students were encouraged to find their passion and persevere it in the mental health field. Different opportunities, such as the growing need of social workers and therapists who are trained to address problems from a multicultural perspective were also addressed.
The variety of opportunities in the field of mental health particularly stood out for audience member Blanca Flores.
“Examine what your fears are,” Flores said when it comes to reaching out for help or being proactive about health. She also addressed the many resources available for people.
“There is a definite need for providers to give care,” said panelist Maria Zaval.
