The Associated Student Senate heard a small variety of proposals, including an application to the senate Jan. 28.
Thor Olsen pitched the first proposal: his senate application for Vice President of Advocacy. He said SRJC is a place where future leaders in society are being developed and that the senate is one of its agents to encourage these students by creating a positive atmosphere. A neuroscience major, he is passionate about education and wants to be a part of a group that works to foster that same passion in others.
Joshua Pinaula, Vice President of Organization for the Santa Rosa Campus, suggested revising the bylaws of the senate and Inter Club Council. This revision would allow for clubs to be more autonomous by balancing control between the ICC and the senate. The clubs, for example, would be able to make more group-related decisions, such as the reactivation of a club, without needing to consult the senate. The senate did not make a decision because this meeting was the first reading of the proposal.
Hilleary Izard, president of the campus Service Employees International Union, proposed ordering new A-frame signs for the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campus’ Student Affairs offices. These signs would be used to display information relevant to students such as when and where an upcoming Transfer Day is occurring.
Several of these A-frame signs currently in use are worn by time, sunlight and unfriendly weather, having been used outdoors for many years. The proposal to the senate was to establish the number of new signs needed and what sort of budget would be needed to purchase them.
Senate members raised questions concerning prices and the exact types of A-frames that should be ordered. At the time of adjournment the senate was considering the purchase of 13 smaller frames and three larger heavier duty frames with a budget of no more than $2,000. Further discussion is needed before a decision can be made.
Discussing a spectrum of issues that concern SRJC students on varying levels, the Associated Students Senate meetings are public so students may attend. They are usually held every other Monday with alternate locations between the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. The next meeting is set for Feb. 10 from 3-5 p.m. in the Bertolini Senate Chambers.
