Many people don’t know what field to go into when thinking of a career, but that doesn’t mean you need wait for the answer to fall in your lap. In fact, we have a wonderful career center here on campus that has the resources to help you decide.
According to Jeannie Dulberg, interim manager of the Santa Rosa Junior College Career Development Services, this is a rarity. And if you fit into this category you will perhaps never understand the doubts and uncertainties many face in determining their perfect career path.
“Few of us are in the careers we want to stay in for the rest of our lives,” Dahlberg said.
Most individuals will have several different careers over the scope of their lifetime; whether cashier, retail associate, finance manager, nursing professional, or teacher, each position will provide a crucial step in finding that one perfect career. Some individuals will not have the cognizance to recognize or decipher the solutions they may discover along their career journey, but never fret there are many options available to assist with obtaining the crucial skills and knowledge necessary to achieve that perfect career path objective.
One course of action is to enroll in a higher learning facility like SRJC. At SRJC the professionals in the Career Development Services department expertly assist students and alumni to delve into the aspects of their career choices and develop an educational plan to assist in obtaining the career goal through.
The Career Development Services presents several seminars each year to assist with career choice and development. One of these was the SRJC’s Career Center Orientation, held Oct. 19 on the third floor of the Bertolini Student Center. Dulberg explained the seminar’s intention is to provide individuals with information on the many tools are available to assist in the “quest for fame and fortune with a career that you love.”
Some of the tools are websites that offer self-scoring testing, which are designed to help individuals answer questions regarding the career path they’ve chosen or hope to choose, plus other educational and employment opportunities. One student, who gave his name only as Justin, is majoring in Psychology and admitted to attending several of the seminars offered, “I find the information covered to be very beneficial, and they also provide job opportunity lists that are not available other places.”
Three of the websites discussed are www.careercruising.com, www.eureka.org, and www.cacareercafe.com. Each site offers its own individual help tools on a range of subjects including resume writing and interviewing skills. Some of the tests do require a counselor’s approval, which the Career Development Service allows for appointment sessions.
