Sonoma State University Professor Rick Luttmann told an SRJC audience how the end of the world this year shouldn’t be taken seriously, proving his theory through mathematics and pointing out how the Mayans used it for the first time.
“An archaeologist went to the Mayan communities and asked what would happen in 2012? They had no idea,” he said.
SRJC student Kvin Phan said, “I didn’t really understand the mathematics part of it, which was unfortunately most of the lecture.”
He lectured about the history of the Mayans and their calendar. With the help of an old projector, images displayed the calendar and part of it as well. On the projector he also showed Mayan symbols on a couple slides and explained what they meant in terms of numbers.
“It really wasn’t what I expected from this presentation. It felt like more of a lecture actually and that I was taking another class,” said Rachel Andrews.
The audience filled half of the auditorium with a respectable amount of people showing up, but with the majority of the crowd consisting of older people rather than young students.
Luttmann ended by saying, “Don’t worry about it! And in case I’m wrong, I’ll buy you all Christmas dinner.”
