The SRJC Veterinary Technician Program and Petaluma Animal Services invite students, friends and neighbors to get a free rabies vaccine for their dog or cat in the front parking area of the Petaluma campus, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 28.
Two hundred vaccines are available on a first-come, first-serve basis to healthy and cooperative animals.
All pets must be contained appropriately. Dogs must have a collar or harness and leash; cats must be enclosed in a functional carrier.
SRJC Vet Tech students will administer vaccines donated by MWI Veterinary Supply under the direction of Dan Famini, DVM. Allowing the students to do the work is “one of the primary reasons that this clinic is occurring,” Famini said.
California state law requires a rabies vaccination for every dog over four months of age and it is part of the mandatory licensing of all dogs in California.
“If you already have a regular veterinarian you won’t need this service, but many students are likely to benefit from this no-cost opportunity,” Famini said. “A rabies vaccine can cost between $16-$36 depending on where you get your pet vaccinated and the type or brand of rabies vaccine used.”
The Petaluma campus is closed on Sundays so parking is free, however no buildings or bathrooms will be open so please bring water for your pet in case there is a wait. The Petaluma campus is located at 680 Sonoma Mountain Parkway.
