SRJC faculty members will host their third War and Peace forum to discuss topics regarding the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, and how these wars continue to have a major impact right here on campus, Thursday March17.
The main goal of the forum is to help students better understand the dramatic impact of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars at home as well as abroad, and help students realize how they are directly affected.
History Professor Martin Bennett will be one of eight instructors discussing aspects of the war. His section includes the history of the war, the politics behind the war and the roots of aggression in general.
“The War and Peace forum is a place where we can share a dialogue about the reasons for the war, the costs for war and the consequences,” Bennett said. “Most students go about their daily business without really knowing what’s going on overseas.”
The forum will consist of three workshops, all revolving around the same issue but breaking up the discussion into different categories. The first will include the history and politics behind the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan. The second presentation will discuss the prospects for peace, and stress the importance of diplomacy and negotiations to bring peace. The third presentation will be a dialogue about the long-term consequences of the war, including the impacts on the economy and on our democratic process.
The presentation will take place from 3-6 p.m. in rooms 4245 and 4246 in Doyle Library, and will be hosted by a group of faculty members from departments including history, economics, sociology, psychology, political science and english.
