Richard Call, SRJC Board of Trustees president, announced at the Board meeting Sept. 14 that Dr. Robert Agrella, president and superintendent of SRJC, is retiring effective June 30, 2011.
Agrella announced his intention to retire at the Board of Trustees’ annual retreat Aug. 31. At 67 years old, “he just wanted to retire,” Call said. “He wants to enjoy the good years he has left.” Agrella served the second longest term as president at 20 years.
“It’s like any retirement,” Call said. “And we’ve had a lot of retirements lately.”
According to Call, everything is going to continue as usual until Agrella retires in June. “It is never a good time for the president to retire,” Call said.
The college is continuing with the re-engineering project, planning on continual changes made by the new president. “It’s going to be a kind of dynamic process,” Call said.
The Board of Trustees will look for a replacement nationally, with the board determining the number of candidates based on the results of their search.
“We were all very sad to see him go,” Call said. “He’s been a good president and a good leader.”
Agrella has been president and superintendent of two other colleges: Cabrillo College for five years and Mendocino College for two.
Agrella was unavailable to comment on his retirement as the Oak Leaf went to print.
