For its fall 2024 debut, Santa Rosa Junior College Theatre Arts will present David Ives’ collection of short comedies, “All in the Timing,” from Oct. 4 to Oct. 13 at the Burbank Studio Theatre.
A highlight of the production is Ives’ clever and hilarious use of language and how it is meticulously used in communication between the characters of each piece.
“I would say [David Ives’] big themes are that he focuses on the struggle on human relationships, romantic relationships. He sort of examines and celebrates the absurd and the existential qualities of human existence,” said Director Leslie McCauley.
McCauley described the show as smart, engaging, fun and funny, and hopes that audiences take away a renewed fascination with language and words.
“David Ives loves language and that is actually one of the connecting themes of all of these,” she said. “The way he uses language, the way he uses words gives us sort of a new, quirky perspective on things to the extent that he really has made up this entire other language called ‘unamunda’ in the one-act ‘Universal Language.’”
McCauley described the production as being entirely designed by current or recent alums. “I think we’re one of the very few community colleges that has main stage shows designed entirely by students,” she said.
“All in the Timing” will run at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 4-5 and Oct. 10-12, with 2 p.m. matinee showings on Oct. 6, 12 and 13. According to McCauley, the show should last just under two hours with an intermission and the six acts, each 10 to 18 minutes long.
The show is recommended for audiences 13 years or older due to strong language and minimal adult content.
Tickets cost $25 for general audiences, $20 for students and seniors and $15 for youths under 12 years old. Tickets are available online or by calling (707) 527-4307. For more details, visit Box Office information.
